$20 on groceries
$20 of your weekly $50 budget should be spent on fresh fruit and vegetables, and you can get organic produce for that money.
A bag of chopped spinach or kale costs $5, while a head of broccoli is even cheaper, with a price of $3. A bag of organic apples costs the same as the spinach, while a bunch of celery costs the same as the broccoli. You can also get a few sweet potatoes or avocados for about $4.
$5-10 on the bulk section
Beans, nuts and seeds and grains should be bought in bulk. Keep the amount small – after all, you won’t need a pound of beans. Buy in ounces, and you can try different types of grains, nuts or seeds every week.
Beans, rice and quinoa cost about $2, while $3 will get you raw almonds or whole grain oats.
Don’t forget the aisle options
If you want to buy rice or oats in a bag, they cost the same as in bulk, although in bigger amounts. Canned beans can be found for cheap, and they’re also easier to prepare. A container of oats costs about $3, a bag of flaxseeds has the same price, and you can find 2 cans of chickpeas for $4.
$5-7 on non-dairy products
Buy non-dairy milk or yogurt in a container to save some money.
Spend your remaining money on frozen produce
Although fresh is definitely better, frozen fruits and veggies cost less and they’re still healthier than processed food. You can get a bag of spinach for about $3, or a pound of frozen fruit for the same price.
